The three-pin 5 V regulator every workshop keeps in a drawer. Feed the input anything from 7 V up to about 25 V and it holds the output at 5 V within 0.2 V, up to 1.5 A, with thermal shutdown and current limiting built in so it survives being overloaded. Add 0.33 uF on the input and 0.1 uF on the output and you have a supply. It is linear, so it burns the difference as heat - dropping 12 V to 5 V at half an amp means 3.5 W, which needs a heatsink.
