A Sharp-pattern GP2Y0A02YK0F infrared rangefinder covering 20 to 150 cm - about three times the reach of the common short-range IR sensor. It runs from 4.5-5.5V at roughly 33 mA and gives an analog voltage, around 2.05V from one end of the range to the other, refreshed every 38 ms or so. Because it works by triangulation it copes with dark surfaces better than most, but anything closer than 20 cm reads ambiguously, so keep obstacles beyond that.
