An NPN Darlington power transistor in TO-220: two transistors on one die, so the current gain is over 1000 and a milliamp or two from a microcontroller pin will switch 5 A at up to 100 V. That makes it the easy way to drive a motor, a solenoid, a relay bank or a big LED array from logic. The trade-off is the Darlington's saturation drop - about 2 V at 3 A - so it gets warm and wants a heatsink at anything like full current.
Key features
- NPN Darlington: gain over 1000 at 0.5 A and 3 A
- 100 V collector-emitter, 5 A continuous, 8 A peak
- Switch it from a logic pin through a base resistor
- Saturation 2.0 V max at 3 A - fit a heatsink
- Needs about 2.5 V of base drive
- TO-220, pins base / collector / emitter
- PNP complement is the TIP127
