The standard 5 mm through-hole LED, sold singly in red, green, blue, yellow or as a multi-colour RGB part. They are the indicator light of every project - power on, status, error - and last effectively forever if you run them gently. The longer lead is the anode and goes to the positive side, and they must always be driven through a series resistor: about 220 ohms from a 5V rail is the safe default for a red or yellow one.
