A slot-type photo interrupter on a carrier board: an infrared LED faces a phototransistor across a 10 mm gap, and an LM393 comparator squares the result into a clean high/low you can wire straight to a GPIO. Fit it over a slotted disc on a wheel or shaft and count pulses to get speed and distance. It runs on 3.3V or 5V at about 15 mA, with an indicator LED that lights while the slot is clear.
