A fixed 9V linear regulator in a TO-220 tab package, good for up to 1.5 A and accepting anything up to 35V in. Add a capacitor either side and you have a clean, quiet 9V rail with current limiting, thermal shutdown and safe-area protection built in - the least fuss way to run 9V pedals, radios or op-amp circuits from a 12V supply. It needs about 2V of headroom, so feed it at least 11V.
