The op-amp most people learn analogue electronics on: one general-purpose amplifier in an 8-pin DIP, internally compensated, short-circuit protected and with offset-null pins. It gives about 1 MHz gain-bandwidth and a 0.5 V/µs slew rate on supplies up to ±15V - plenty for audio-rate buffers, amplifier stages and filter experiments. It is not a rail-to-rail or single-supply part: the output stops a couple of volts short of each rail, so give it a split supply for signals that swing negative.
