The shift register that turns three microcontroller pins into eight outputs, and cascades through its serial output for sixteen, twenty-four and beyond. Data shifts in on one clock, then a second latch clock moves the whole byte to the 3-state outputs at once, so nothing flickers mid-update. It runs on 2 to 6V and each output is good for about 6 mA at 5V - fine for indicator LEDs, but put a transistor or a ULN2003 in between for anything heavier than that.
Key features
- 8-bit serial-in, parallel-out shift register
- 3 pins in, 8 outputs - cascade for more
- Separate shift and latch clocks, so no flicker
- Supply 2V to 6V
- About 6 mA per output at 5V
- 3-state outputs with an output-enable pin
