The cheap, dependable way to give a robot a sense of what is in front of it. An NE555 pulses the infrared LED at a carrier frequency and a matched receiver looks for that pulse coming back, so it shrugs off room lighting far better than a plain photodiode pair. Detection runs from about 2 to 30 cm, set on the trim pot, and OUT simply goes LOW when something is seen - a digital yes/no, not a distance reading.
