The chip that turns a microcontroller's plain UART into an RS-485 bus. It drives a differential pair instead of a single-ended line, which is why RS-485 survives hundreds of metres of cable and industrial electrical noise where plain serial gives up. One driver and one receiver share the pair, so it is half duplex - you flip a direction pin to talk or listen. Up to 32 nodes can sit on one bus at data rates to 2.5 Mbps. This is the bare 8-pin DIP chip, not a ready-made breakout module.
Key features
- Logic-level UART to differential RS-485
- Half duplex - DE/RE pin picks talk or listen
- Up to 32 nodes on a single bus
- Data rates to 2.5 Mbps, not slew limited
- Runs on a single 5V supply, 120-500 uA
- For Modbus, long cable runs and noisy sites
