Feed this chip a 4-bit BCD number and it lights the right segments of a 7-segment digit for you, so your microcontroller only has to put out 0-9 in binary instead of driving seven pins. It has an on-chip latch, so you can freeze a digit while you set up the next one, plus lamp-test and blanking inputs. The outputs source up to 25 mA each, which means it drives a common-cathode display directly through series resistors.
