An industrial-style infrared proximity switch in a threaded M18 barrel: screw it through a panel, set the range with the trimmer at the back, and it pulls its output line low whenever something is in front of it. Range adjusts from roughly 3 to 80 cm, and because it uses modulated infrared it ignores room lighting. The output is NPN open-collector, so add a pull-up - or use your board's internal one - and read it as an ordinary digital pin.
