A laser rangefinder the size of a thumbnail: it times how long a pulse of invisible 940 nm light takes to return, which makes it far less fussy than an ultrasonic sensor about narrow targets, soft surfaces and cluttered corners. It reads roughly 30 mm to 2 m with millimetre resolution, at up to about 50 readings a second over I2C. The eye-safe Class 1 laser and tight beam suit robot obstacle sensing, gesture triggers and tank level gauges.
