A tiny audio power amplifier that runs from 4V to 12V and drives an 8 ohm speaker directly, with almost no supporting parts - a capacitor on the output and you have sound. Gain is 20 as it ships, and bridging a capacitor across pins 1 and 8 lifts it to 200, which is what makes it the standard chip for little battery amplifiers, intercoms, sound effects boxes and the audio stage of a radio. Around 325 mW into 8 ohms: enough for a small speaker, not for a room.
