The blue LM2596 board that turns up in every workshop drawer - a TO-263 LM2596S, a 47uH inductor and a multiturn trimmer to set the output. It steps 4.5-40V down to an adjustable 1.25-37V, switching at 150kHz at up to about 92% efficiency with under 30mV of ripple. The chip is rated 3A, but on this bare board with no heatsink, 2A or roughly 15W is the sensible ceiling for continuous work - above that, fit a heatsink or move some air over it.
Key features
- LM2596S buck, 4.5-40V in, 1.25-37V out
- 3A peak; keep continuous load near 2A / 15W unheatsinked
- Efficiency up to ~92%, ripple under 30mV
- 150kHz switching, multiturn trimmer for the output
- Input must sit about 1.5V above the output
- Solder pads for IN+/IN- and OUT+/OUT-
