A TCRT5000 reflective pair on a black board with an LM393 comparator behind it, trimmed with the pot to say dark or light and nothing in between. It reads up to about 25 mm away over a roughly 35 degree cone, on 3.3-5V at around 20 mA. Being a three-pin board with one clean digital OUT makes it very easy to wire, and line followers normally run two or more side by side so the robot can tell which way it is drifting off the line.
