The small board that solders onto the back of a 1602 or 2004 character LCD and turns its sixteen parallel pins into two I2C wires. A PCF8574 expander does the work; the blue trimmer sets contrast and a jumper switches the backlight. You wire four pins - VCC, GND, SDA, SCL - instead of a dozen, and drive it with the LiquidCrystal_I2C library. Most of these answer at address 0x27; boards fitted with the PCF8574A variant answer at 0x3F.
