A TCRT5000 reflective optical sensor on a small carrier board. The black package holds an infrared emitter and a phototransistor side by side, measuring how much infrared bounces back off whatever is beneath it - dark surfaces reflect little, light surfaces reflect a lot, which is all a line follower needs. The board adds a comparator and a trimmer, so what reaches your microcontroller is a clean digital HIGH or LOW. Runs from 5V.
