Eight Darlington drivers in one 18-pin chip, so eight microcontroller pins can switch eight real loads. Each channel sinks up to 500 mA at up to 50 V, and a clamp diode per output (brought out to the COM pin) handles the kick from relays, solenoids and motors. Every input has a 2.7 kOhm series resistor, so it drives straight from 5 V logic with no extra parts. The outputs sink to ground, so wire the load between your supply and the output pin.
