Seven Darlington driver channels in one 16-pin DIP, sitting between a microcontroller and things that draw real current: relays, solenoids, small motors, filament lamps and the 28BYJ-48 stepper. Each channel sinks up to 500 mA at up to 50 V, and each input already has a 2.7 kohm base resistor so a 5 V logic pin drives it directly. Pin 9 brings out common-cathode flyback diodes, so inductive loads have somewhere for their spike to go.
