Dual-wipe DIP sockets on the standard 2.54 mm pitch, in 6, 8, 14, 16, 18, 20, 28 and 40-pin sizes. Solder the socket instead of the chip and the IC never sees soldering heat, and you can pull it out later to reprogram it or swap a blown one without touching the board again. The notch at one end lines up with pin 1 on the chip. Worth fitting for anything you might change: microcontrollers, op-amps, logic and driver ICs.
