The best known timer chip ever made, and still the quickest way to get a delay, a pulse or a square wave without writing a line of code. Add two resistors and a capacitor and it free-runs as an oscillator; swap the arrangement and it fires a single timed pulse instead. It runs on anything from 4.5V to 16V and its output will push or pull 200 mA, enough to drive a relay, a small speaker or a string of LEDs straight from the pin.
Key features
- Timing from microseconds to hours
- Output drives 200 mA directly
- Supply 4.5V to 16V
- Astable, monostable and bistable modes
- Set frequency with two resistors and a capacitor
- 8-pin DIP, endless published circuits
