A complete little DC-DC converter on a chip: reference, oscillator, comparator, current limit and a 1.5 A output switch in one 8-pin DIP. Add an inductor, a diode, two resistors and a timing capacitor and the same part will step voltage up, step it down, or invert it to a negative rail. Input range is a generous 3 V to 40 V and it switches at up to 100 kHz.
