Takes a 4-wire serial feed on three microcontroller pins and drives up to 64 LEDs - eight 7-segment digits or an 8x8 matrix - handling the multiplexing, the digit decoding and 16 steps of brightness for you. It runs on 4.0 to 5.5V, sets the segment current with one external resistor, and drops to 150 µA in shutdown; chain chips through DOUT for longer displays. One thing to get right: it is a common-cathode driver, so common-anode displays will not work with it.
