The chip that lets a 5 V microcontroller talk to a real RS-232 port. An on-board charge pump generates the plus and minus voltages the standard needs from a single 5 V supply, giving two drivers and two receivers - enough for TX, RX and one handshake line each way. Receivers tolerate 30 V inputs either way and the link runs to 120 kbit/s. Note the plain MAX232 wants four 1 uF capacitors; only the MAX232A and MAX202 work with 0.1 uF.
