A bare X-band Doppler module: it transmits a continuous 10.525 GHz signal and mixes the reflection back down, so anything moving in front of it appears as a low-frequency beat on the IF pin. Unlike a PIR it needs no body heat and it will see through plastic or thin drywall, and the beat frequency is proportional to speed - roughly 72 Hz per metre per second. The catch is that the raw IF output is only about 200 microvolts, so it needs an op-amp gain stage before a microcontroller can read it.
Key features
- 10.525 GHz X-band Doppler radar
- IF output about 200 uVp-p - needs an amplifier
- Beat frequency about 72 Hz per m/s of target speed
- Sees through plastic and thin walls
- 5V supply, 30 - 40 mA
- Range about 4 - 15 m once amplified
