Contactless angle sensing done properly: hold a small diametrically magnetised magnet 0.5-3 mm above the chip and the AS5600 reports absolute rotation as a 12-bit number - 4096 steps per turn, about 0.088 degrees each. It talks I2C at the fixed address 0x36 and can give the same angle as a PWM or analog voltage on its OUT pin instead. Runs from 3.3V or 5V, and since nothing touches, there is nothing to wear out.
