The classic bat-style rangefinder: give Trig a 10 microsecond pulse, time how long Echo stays high, and divide. It works from about 2 cm out to 4 m with roughly 3 mm of resolution over a cone of about 15 degrees, on 5V and under 15 mA. Cheap, forgiving and covered by every Arduino tutorial ever written, which is why it is still the default obstacle sensor on a first robot. Soft or angled targets scatter the ping.
