A triac in a small TO-92 case - a solid-state switch for AC loads. Unlike an SCR, which only conducts one way, a triac conducts in both directions, so it can switch or phase-control a full mains sine wave: lamp dimmers, fan speed controllers, small heaters and solenoid valves. TO-92 means it is a low-current device, for small loads or for triggering a larger triac - approaching an amp, step up to a TO-220 part such as a BT136.
