A general-purpose PNP switching transistor, the complement to the 2N2222: 60V, 600 mA, hFE from 100 upwards and a 200 MHz transition frequency. PNP means it sits on the high side with its emitter to the positive rail and turns on when the base is pulled below the emitter - the opposite of the NPN habit, and the usual reason a first attempt does nothing. Stock here is the TO-92 plastic version rather than the original metal can, and TO-92 pinouts differ between makers, so check before soldering.
