The budget 13.56 MHz RFID reader/writer, and the one most Arduino tutorials assume. An NXP MFRC522 reads and writes ISO 14443A / Mifare cards over SPI, with about 5 cm of range from the PCB coil, and a white card and a blue keyfob are included. It runs on 3.3V only - 5V on VCC will kill it - though its SPI lines cope with an Uno's 5V logic. Cheaper and simpler than a PN532, but it only reads cards: no NFC with a phone, and no card emulation.
