The classic Arduino motor shield: two L293D bridges plus a 74HC595 shift register let one Uno run four DC motors, or two steppers, or a mix of the two, with two servo headers on pins 9 and 10 as well. Each channel gives 600mA continuous and 1.2A peak at 4.5-25V, and everything lands on screw terminals rather than jumper wires. Stack it on the board, install the AFMotor library, and a four-wheel robot is a few lines of code away.
