Sharp's triangulation rangefinder flashes an infrared beam and works out the angle the reflection comes back at, so the reading barely cares whether the target is matt black or shiny white. It gives an analog voltage that falls as the target moves away, refreshed every 38 ms, across a working span of 10 to 80 cm. Faster than an ultrasonic and unbothered by soft, sound-absorbing surfaces - but the curve is non-linear and folds back below 10 cm, so keep objects outside that.
