The A4988 carrier is the StepStick driver behind most 3D printers and small CNC machines. It runs one bipolar stepper from an 8-35V motor supply, giving about 1A per coil bare and up to 2A with a heatsink and airflow, and needs only two signals from your board - step and direction. MS1/MS2/MS3 select full, half, quarter, eighth or sixteenth steps, and the tiny trimmer sets the current limit so a NEMA 17 runs cool and quiet rather than buzzing and cooking.
