A 5 mm through-hole infrared emitting LED - the transmitting half of a remote control, a beam-break sensor or a simple optical link. It looks dead to the eye because it radiates in the near infrared, but a phone camera will show it glowing. Wire it like any LED, longer lead to the positive side through a series resistor, and pair it with an IR receiver or phototransistor. Stocked in water-clear and black-tinted bodies.
